Mission Accomplished!
We are thrilled to share the success of the recent Peer Mediation Bootcamp put on by Western Justice Center, held at the prestigious Pepperdine Caruso Law Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. During this day-long event, students engaged in a variety of activities, including role-playing, strategy development, and coaching.
A Collaborative Effort
This transformative event was made possible through the generous support of our donors and the dedication of our partners:
- Western Justice Center: Our invaluable partners provided expert training to 47 students, ages 4th to 12th grade, from four schools: KIPP Foundation – Academy of Opportunity, Hillcrest Elementary, ICEF Public Schools – View Park Prep, and Pacific Palisades Charter High School.
- Pepperdine University: We extend our sincere gratitude to Pepperdine University for hosting our event and providing the ideal setting for learning and growth.
- Ken Cloke: Renowned mediation expert, Ken Cloke, shared his wisdom with both students and adults, inspiring a deeper understanding of mediation principles.
- Days of Dialogue/INVLA: Mark and Avis Ridley Thomas generously supported our facilitated dialogues as part of our program with parents, counselors, and administrators, fostering collaboration and support for peer mediation programs.
Empowering the Next Generation
During the Bootcamp, students engaged in a variety of activities, including role-playing, strategy development, and coaching. They honed their skills in conflict resolution, communication, and empathy, empowering them to become effective peer mediators.
In the peer mediation training, participants engaged in a dialogue process designed to foster understanding and resolve conflicts. The process emphasized active listening, empathy, and collaboration, where each participant had the opportunity to express their perspective while being heard without interruption. Mediators guided the conversation by asking open-ended questions and encouraging reflection, helping individuals identify common ground and work toward mutually agreeable solutions.
The discussions during the dialogue highlighted the importance of non-judgmental communication and the role of mediators in maintaining a neutral, supportive environment. Participants learned how to manage emotional responses, reframe negative statements, and facilitate productive conversations. By the end of the training, the group recognized the power of dialogue as a tool not only for resolving conflicts but also for strengthening relationships and building trust. These insights were shared and discussed, offering valuable takeaways for applying the mediation techniques in real-life situations.
A Lasting Impact
The impact of this training extends beyond the event itself. These young peacebuilders will now return to their schools equipped with the tools to address conflicts peacefully and promote a positive school climate.
